The first writer to introduce the vampire in literature was Lord Byron in the eighteenth century, but the most significant writer to develop the myth was Bram Stoker. He is the ââ¬Å¾fatherâ⬠of the vampire as he gave a complete description of the vampire in his most famous bookâ⬠Draculaâ⬠. After the release of the book, the myth of the vampire became extremely popular amongst writers and as a consequence the books whose main characters were vampires sky-rocketed. Amongst the most famous contemporary writers which developed and modified the myth of the vampire is Stephenie Meyer with her famous ââ¬Å¾Twilightâ⬠. In her book we find a multitude of deviations from the myth but still s he keeps many things as they are with the main purpose of enhancing the vampireââ¬â¢s romantic features. For instance, when Bella takes on the task of finding out the reason why Edward isnââ¬â¢t allowed to come to the La Push beach, she finds a book which describes what Edward is. When searching the camera focuses on all the key words that point to the unnatural and supernatural abilities which Edward has: ââ¬Å¾the cold oneâ⬠, one who drinksâ⬠the immortal drinkâ⬠, ââ¬Å¾undeadâ⬠, ââ¬Å¾immortalâ⬠and so on. The director of the Twilight movie makes sure that Edward keeps his ââ¬Å¾angelicâ⬠aura which the author wanted to underline and he does so in the scene of the biology class, scene in which Bella was placed by their pro fessor next to Edward. As she is walking towards him the camera focuses on him sitting in front of an owl which has the wings wide spread. This scene is interesting from a visual point of view because of the positioning of the owl which gives the impression that Edward is actually winged, thus resembling an angel rather than a ââ¬Å¾monsterâ⬠. But Stephenie Meyer isnââ¬â¢t so quick in erasing all the notorious mythological traits of the vampire. She introduces a few well known characteristics of the vampire unaltered. For instance vampires are ââ¬Å¾pale white and ice coldâ⬠, which is in fact the first clue Bella is given , clue which leads her to the truth of Edwards existence, to the fact that he is a vampire. All these elements give us the image of a lifeless body, as the blood no longer circulates robbing the skin of its colour and of its warmth. Another element that circulates in the Twilight book/movie is the fact that vampires drink blood. What kind of blood is the real question. Edward and all the Cullenââ¬â¢s call themselves ââ¬Å¾vegetariansâ⬠as they only feast on the blood of animals not humans. Stephenie Meyer uses this particularity making it a clue that shows us the kind of vampire one is. From the beginning of the movie Bella notices that Edwardsââ¬â¢s eyes change colour. The first time she sees him his eyes were black, but after he returns form his ââ¬Å¾tripâ⬠the colour of his eyes turned golden-brown. So, the colour of their eyes are an indicative to how hungry they are for blood and how strong they are to resist the call of blood( the first time Edward didnââ¬â¢t even want to look at her but when his thrust was quenched he approached her rather suddenly and unexpectedly). Another particularity of the eyes of a vampire is that they show whether a vampire feeds on human or animal blood. This is best shown in the baseball scene when James and the other vampires come and disrupt the Cullenââ¬â¢s game. The camera focuses on the eyes of every new vampire( which , as we were previously shown, attacked humans) and we can clearly notice that their eyes are scarlet red. So the redness of the eyes is an indicative of the fact that these vampires are notâ⬠vegetariansâ⬠. The similarities stop here. There are definitely very few elements which are kept from all the previous books that present vampires, and to sum everything up we know that they have cold and pale skin, the fact that they drink blood and the fact that they are very fast and strong. The differences are way more numerous that the similarities and in this part of the essay we are going to present just that. Stephenie Meyer also introduces a lot of new elements. For instance the most important entirely new element is that blood has a distinguished smell, a smell which can trigger the vampires hunting instinct. Edward calls the smell of Bellaââ¬â¢s blood ââ¬Å¾ a drugâ⬠and ââ¬Å¾his personal brand of heroinâ⠬ . First of all there is nothing that indicates Edward as a vampire apart from his cold and white skin( and the fact that he shines like diamonds but only in the sun). But if this were a novel written by letââ¬â¢s say Anne Rice, the vampire would definitely have fangs. Stephenie Meyesââ¬â¢s vampires donââ¬â¢t really have fangs, but really sharp teeth and when they bite they leave a pretty clear impression on the victims body as we are shown in the scene in which James bites Bella. Another abolished myth is that vampires change their shape, and the most famous animal in which a vampire can turn into is the bat. This myth is not present in the movie as Edward like all his kin cannot fly; but Edward has the ability of running so fast that he appears to fly. When he runs at his full potential no one can even spot him doing so. To support this theory we have two scenes in which his speed is such that it actually makes him invisible to the naked eye. First of all we have the e pisode in which he save Bella from the car crash, running from the other side of the parking lot without being noticed. The second time we witness this capacity of his to ââ¬Å¾disappearâ⬠in the scene in which Bella wake up in the middle of the night and sees him standing in a corner; but when she turns to turn on the lights and looks up at him again he isnââ¬â¢t there anymore. In fact he is so fast that he doesnââ¬â¢t even need to fly. This last scene is linked to another myth, or rather with the absence of a myth, the one according to which a vampire can only enter the house of someone only after he is invited. It is obvious that Bella didnââ¬â¢t invite Edward in her room, but still he entered and this isnââ¬â¢t the only example which indicates this. Another feature of the vampire myth that Stephenie Meyer didnââ¬â¢t include in her book is the fact that her vampires have a reflection in the mirror. I could not demonstrate properly this theory because of the l ack of mirrors in the movie but in the scene in which Bella first sees Edward, the camera focuses on him and we see, as he opens the door to enter the cafeteria, that he has a reflection in the glass (even through a glass is not a mirror it can show ones reflection). In the same day when Bella confronts Edward and tells him that she knows what he is, he takes her to the top of the mountain to show her what he looks like in the sun. When a ray of light hits his skin Bella sees that his skin appears to be made out of diamonds. When she says that he is beautiful he answersâ⬠this is the skin of a killerâ⬠, ââ¬Å¾ you believe a lie, in a camouflageâ⬠,â⬠everything about me invites you in, my voice, my face even my smellâ⬠. The fact that his skin shines in the sun is another novelty which Stephenie Meyer presents as all authors before her present vampires as creatures which are very vulnerably to the sun, as it can turn a vampire into ashes. All these elements that point to a perfect being; they are all part of their ââ¬Å¾weaponsâ⬠as they ca attract their victims which find their irresistible charm. The fact that girls gravitate around Edward like moths around the light bulb is best shown in the scene in which he takes Bella to restaurant, when the waitress simply canââ¬â¢t take her eyes of him. This is all part of their hunting strategy, and this is why Edward compares their relationship to that of a hunter and the hunted by saying thatâ⬠the lion feel in love with the lambâ⬠. When Bella enters Edwardââ¬â¢s house for the first time we can see how the setting, the way in which they chose to decorate their house, a lot of myths are pulverised. When Bella came in the house she is astonished of how light and open the house is and Edward ironically asksâ⬠What did you expect? Coffins and dungeons? ; from his attitude we can conclude that they do not live in dark places and sleep in coffins as the myth states. Furt her more, when she gets to see his bedroom she does not spot a bed because Edward doesnââ¬â¢t ever sleep, so elements linked to sleep( whether it is the eternal sleepââ¬âcoffins, or just regular sleepââ¬âbeds) are entirely missing from the decor of the place. Another element that is in the house but that totally contradicts the myth of the vampire is the presence of a wooden cross, a big and ancient cross placed on the wall. So, in Stephenie Meyerââ¬â¢s vision vampires do not have any fears concerning the cross, unlike previous authors that made the cross an object that can kill a vampire. This is interesting because of two things. First of all Meyerââ¬â¢s vampires cannot be killed by humans, they are too strong so they can only kill each other. Secondly because the cross symbolises God, the supreme power, the holy power that protects us; the fact that Meyerââ¬â¢s vampires do not dodge the cross means that they are no longer the creatures of demonic origin, no lo nger creatures from hell. The fact that only vampires can kill vampires has already been established. But how is the question. We find that out in the scene in which James in killed by Edwards brothers. They do not use wooden stakes or a silver bullet to kill him as the only way of killing a vampire is to teat him apart and burn the pieces. Arthur Miller Essay We then created a scene based on knowledge gained through the play text and the discussions and showed it to the class, and received in return their comments. However our teacher did not believe any one in our group had the characters as believable as they could, and thought they needed improving. She decided upon giving us an extremely beneficial exercise into do as a class, which would make us look deeper into our characters, as so there fore convey a better example of that character in our scenes. We all had to stand up, facing our teacher, in a way we believed our character would stand, also incorporating facial and bodily stance. At that time, the character I was playing was Eddie, a respectable legal Italian immigrant living and working amongst the Italian community in New York. I had from previous exploration into the character a visualisation of the type of character Eddie was. The type of man who was tight fisted and bolshy, yet thoughtful of those important to him. This exercise backed up my thoughts on Eddie, and allowed me to make an accurate physical and tonal picture of how Eddie should be acted; tight fisted, yet in no way a mad man, but with a cold expression on his face. We also used freeze frames in many of our scenes, whether it was to change, open, or close scenes, they were useful to us so we knew when to stop or pause. And they were also useful to the audience so they could see a clear distinction between different parts of scenes, or changes of scenes. In one scene we used a large amount of stage to allow the use of levels in a creative way around the stage. We were all in a group of four, and had only one speech from one character to create a scene out of. We devised amongst the group, which would be the most effective way of delivering the characters speech to the class. We decided upon cutting the paragraph in certain areas, into sentences, which could then be allocated to individuals. We then composed ourselves to being character involved, who happened to be Alfieri, and mapped out where each of us was to stand. We decided to start the scene in a freeze frame, but to let the end flow, with repetition of the final line, the voice dynamics getting quieter as the words trailed out. We thought this effect would be good in conveying an inner voice speaking, and would also allow for the next group to add their scene, the following in the play, onto it. The use of mime was also rather important in this scene as well. With hand gestures and facial expressions the climax could be reached, the true expression of the person could come out, making a more believable performance. The History of Babylonian Mathematics The history of ancient Babylonia is really long, but this essay is a short and to the point summery of the entire history. The history of Babylonia started near the end of the year 2000 BC, when invaders were attacking the Sumer kingdom. Sumer was a powerful kingdom in the western part of Asia, and it some what occupied what would become Babylonia. After the kingdom of Sumer was destroyed the city-states of Larsa and Isin came into settle on the land once occupied by Sumer. This led to fighting between Larsa and Isin. After hundreds of years of fighting Larsa defeated Isin. But, just as Larsa beat Isin, Hammurabi came to power in the city of Babylonia. Hammurabi went on to defeat Larsa and start a vast kingdom in the place where the Sumer kingdom used to be. Hammurabi was a very powerful military and political leader. Also he set up a code of law stating ââ¬Å"an eye for an eye, a tooth for a toothâ⬠, this law is called the Hammurabi code and is still used today. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s dynasty was also called the First Dynasty of Babylonia. This dynasty ruled for about 200 years until 1530 BC. Under the control of this dynasty, Babylonia entered a period of prosperity and peace. The Babylonians developed an abstract form of writing based on wedge-shaped symbols. Their symbols were written on wet clay tablets that were baked in the hot sun. Many of thousands of these tablets have survived to this day. They had to use straight lines because curved line could not be drawn in the wet clay. They used these tablets to aid in the calculations of problems. They studied math with the help of these tablets. They studied in mathematics because having a peaceful nation they had no need to specialize in military and warfare, so they learned math and discovered new forms of math. A tribe known as the Kassites began to attack Babylonia when Hammurabiââ¬â¢s son ruled the empire. Over the centuries, the Kassites weakened Babylonia. Finally, around 1530 BC a Kassite dynasty was set up in Babylonia. After about 150 years, the Babylonians and the Kassites lived in peace until the Assyrians attacked Babylonia. They weakened Babylonia so much that the Kassite dynasty fell from power and the Assyrians took control. Because of an influx of many nomadic tribes, Babylonia fell into anarchy for about 200 years. But, back then they had to use because they did not have calculators or computers to make math easier. The study of math he study of math is important because with out math we wouldnââ¬â¢t have all the things we have today, such as computers, cars, planes, space exploring technology, etc. With out math all that stuff, which we take for granted would not be around. We would still be in the dark ages if people with a great understanding for math hadnââ¬â¢t been there to invent new things and pull us out of the dark ages and into the techno age. Even though I may not me a mathematical genius, I realize that with out math I would have to write my whole report out on hand instead of a computer. I could not play my video games or chat online with friends if it wasnââ¬â¢t for math and the understanding of it. The study of math is important to society and probably always will be.

The paper will analyze these poems and then apply thematic links. In Keatsââ¬â¢ poem Ode to a Nightingale, the first stanza begins with the narrator describing heartache. The following emotions each illustrate this main point through the use of words such as ââ¬Ëdrowsy numbnessââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëdull opiateââ¬â¢ (Lines 1-3). The first stanza introduces the reader to the natural element of the nightingale, ââ¬Ëlight-winged Dryad of the treesââ¬â¢(Line 7). This nightingale juxtaposes the narratorââ¬â¢s emotion in a contrasting point of happiness, and thus elicits of the narrator a response of envy (Crawford 478). The narratorââ¬â¢s intent on comparing their lot with the happiness of the nightingale is one full of earnest just as much as envy. The narrator wants to have the nightingaleââ¬â¢s happiness as is proven with the lines, ââ¬ËO for a draught of vintageâ⬠¦That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, And with thee fade away into the forest dimââ¬â¢(Lines 11-20). Thus, the desire of escape is an established theme in Keatsââ¬â¢ poem Ode to a Nightingale (Crawford 476). This idea of escapism is further established in the third stanza as it reads, ââ¬ËFade far away, dissolve, and quite forgetâ⬠¦The weariness, the fever, and the fretââ¬â¢ (Lines 21-23). The wish to be a nightingale, of the thins in life the speaker wishes they could own is all tied up in this tiny songstress, and its life is envied all that much more because of the unattainable nature of the speaker to become like the bird (Columbia Encyclopedia 12356). It is a different world that the speaker desires, one in which heartache, loss, and fretful worries of the mundane world are too heavy to bear, and so their escape is not only to leave society, to wander off into the woods, or even to leave the country, but to transmogrify into another creature, a bird, in which the very symbolism of flight alludes to escape, and a fast one. Not only is escape the ideal of the speaker but to be able to forget about the worry enough to create a beautiful song is the other objective in desiring to become a nightingale. These illusions, and ponderings of transformation is the theme which runs throughout Keatsââ¬â¢ poems. For, in the speakerââ¬â¢s present state in this poem, because, presumably, of their inability to see the world before them, as is interpreted in the lines, ââ¬ËI cannot see what flowers are at my feet, Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughsââ¬â¢(Lines 41-42). Thus, in becoming a nightingale, the narrator will shed the worries of his present human state in society and be able to engross themselves in the natural world (Stillinger 595). In the same mood of transformation the speaker suggests that perhaps death is a great escape, ââ¬ËI have been half in love with easeful Death, Callââ¬â¢d him soft names in many a mused rhyme, To take into the air my quiet breathââ¬â¢(Lines 52-54). Here then is seen the ultimate escapism theme; Death. These two themes, that of escape through nature (nightingale) and through supernatural (Death) run in opposing directions, as Keats points out in the poem, ââ¬Å"Thou wast not born for death, immortal Bird! ââ¬â¢(Line 61). Thus, the bird is proven to be an eternal symbol and thus, the poemââ¬â¢s narrator must find which persuasion; the natural or the supernatural will win them over (Smith 400). In Keatsââ¬â¢ poem Ode to Melancholy, the theme of wanting joy is read throughout the poem. The poem seems to be an inspirational change from Ode to a Nightingale as the poem illustrates a sort of derision from death in the lines, ââ¬ËFor shade to shade will come too drowsily, And drown the wakeful anguish of the soulââ¬â¢ (Lines 9-10). Thus, deathââ¬â¢s personification is in the shadows which the narrator portends to be the end of life, where a person should not go (Lethe). The struggle of depression between happiness is a very simple theme in all of Keatsââ¬â¢ poems, and one that is no different in this poem, yet its syntax is more intricately woven (Stillinger 596). The poem states that happiness cannot be gotten without melancholy and the greater the depression the greater the happiness. The desire of the narrator in this poem, as in Ode to a Nightingale is to be joyous, although the pathway to this joy is complicated with desperate thoughts, and the dragging of reality. This compare and contrast of melancholy and happiness is best seen in the lines, ââ¬Ë She dwells with Beauty-Beauty that must dieââ¬â¢ (Line 21). Thus, the transcendence of the ethereal of Beauty, as with the nightingaleââ¬â¢s song, is something that is captured once, and then is gone, either changed into a memory, a dream, an illusion, or death. The achievement of beauty, joy, and happiness is the main objective for Keatsââ¬â¢ poems. This objective is perfectly illustrated in his poem Ode to Psyche in which the narrator professes the beauty of the goddess. The narrator is questioning the beauty of Psyche, not to test its reality but to wonder whether or not they truly did see her, ââ¬ËEven into thine own soft-conched ear: Surely I dreamââ¬â¢d to-day, or did I see, The winged Psyche with awakenââ¬â¢d eyes? ââ¬â¢ (Lines 4-6). Thus, Psycheââ¬â¢s beauty is not contested, but the vision of her beauty is by the speaker. The speaker goes on to elaborate on the forest scene as had been done with the escapist route imagined in Ode to a Nightingale. The narrator goes on to discuss the nature of their vision as two nymphs embracing arm in arm, a winged boy and Psyche. Thus, the element of the supernatural is combined with that of the natural, which was clearly defined in Ode to a Nightingale with the bird and death; in this poem they collaborate with the goddess being seduced in a forest glen. Thus, these elements, natural and supernatural, work together to form a collaborating image for the reader. This poem dwells more on the illustration of a scene of Psyche being made love to, and the extreme beauty of her, while the previous poems were mainly focused on the narratorââ¬â¢s interpretation of their world in terms of escape and melancholy. The escapist route taken in this poem may best be described as escapism through beauty. The divine is predominately seen in this poem that its presence in comparison to the melancholy wishes found in the previous poems points the decisive reader towards the viewpoint that in beauty, especially of mythological proportions, is found a different form of escape. The belief in the ethereal realm, the realm found beyond the mundane, banal, and real, and into the heavens. The desperation found in the previous cited Keatsââ¬â¢ poems is found in Ode to Psyche in the element of wanting Psyche, of desiring her in this (the narratorââ¬â¢s) modern day, ââ¬ËToo, too late for the fond believing lyre, When holy were the haunted forest boughs, Holy the air, the water, and the fireââ¬â¢ (Lines 37-39). The dedication to this mythological realm is fully witnessed with the narrator in the final stanza, ââ¬ËYes, I will be thy priest, and build a faneââ¬â¢ (Line 50). Thus, the narrator professes to want to be in servitude to the goddess and makes many vows, and paints a pretty picture of what such a life of servitude would be like. This picture involves a lot of natural settings of the forest with trees, bees, birds, streams, stars, flowers, etc. Thus, the image of the real, the natural, is given to support the claim of making the supernatural as real as possible; the theme of the natural and supernatural are seen once again. It does not seem as though Keats is writing with personification; that is, making a woman into the image of the goddess Psyche, but he is using the actual image of the goddess to fulfill a desire. Ode to Indolence deals with temptation and innocence. The poem begins, again, with a very Keatsââ¬â¢ hallucination involving robed figures, with urns. The connotations of death, and of mythology are seen in this imagery. This poem has the narrator ask the three figures why did not leave the speaker alone; this means that the speaker wishes to remain in their state of indolence as Keats writes, ââ¬Ëmy pulse grew less and lessââ¬â¢. When the speaker is done questioning the figures, and they leave the narrator, the poem takes a different turn, as the speaker state, ââ¬ËThen faded, and to follow them I burnââ¬â¢d And ached for wings, because I knew the three: The first was a fair maid, and Love her name; The second was Ambition, pale of cheek, And ever watchful with fatigued eye; The last, whom I love more, the more of blame Is heapââ¬â¢d upon her, maiden most unmeek, ââ¬â I knew to be my demon Poesyââ¬â¢ (Lines 22-31). The speaker then is preoccupied with wanting something of the supernatural world, as is seen in the previous poems discussed, ââ¬ËThey faded, and, forsooth! I wanted wingsââ¬â¢ (Line 32). The desiring of a different world, the world with the shadows is felt just as strongly in this poem as was analyzed in the previous poems. The dream world also survives in this poem as a theme for Keats. It is in the dream that the soul exists more fully than in the actual world, that is the fact that the soul is the conduit through which joy is realized, and so it is in a dream, or a dreamlike world that the speaker is able to find happiness. The longing for the shadows in this poem is the final image which Keats leaves the reader with, ââ¬ËFade softly from my eyes, and be once more In masque-like figures on the dreary urnââ¬â¢ (Lines 57-58). With the image of the urn in this poem, the obvious allusions to death cannot be misinterpreted, and so, death as a supernaturally desired figure as with Ode to a Nightingale is seen by the reader (Mauro 290). The theme of escapism, although quite obvious in the other poems analyzed in this paper is undoubtedly seen in the poem Ode on a Grecian Urn. The idea of negative capability is also read in this poem, or uncertainties. The reader is not given the identities of the figures on the urn, although their impact on the speaker is obvious. The figures are representational of Keatsââ¬â¢ own uncertainty (Negative Capability). The poem serves to focus the use of the imagination as a gateway into the supernatural realm which in itself, and its mysterious are not always known in the corporeal realm. The relationship of art to real life is the inspiration for this poem. The same idea of negative capability, or mystery as was seen in Ode to Indolence with the hazy three figures, and the readerââ¬â¢s own ignorance on their identity is once again seen in Ode to a Grecian Urn. This ââ¬Ëmysteryââ¬â¢ or ignorance is most importantly read in the last three lines of the poem, ââ¬ËThan ours, a friend to man, to whom thou sayââ¬â¢st, ââ¬ËBeauty is truth, truth beauty,ââ¬âthat is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to knowââ¬â¢ is said by the urn or is the poetââ¬â¢s, Keats own view. Each poem analyzed and compared and contrasted in this paper has had an underlying theme of truth; that is, the speakers attempt to find out their own soul, their own personal truth in the realm of the supernatural while at times either forsaking the natural, or dwelling more in the natural in order to make the supernatural seem that much more tangible as is seen in Ode to Psyche. The theme of escape was very strong in Keatsââ¬â¢ poems, it was not all together the main focus of the poetââ¬â¢s viewpoint; instead the focus may also be the singular point of desiring a change. The idea of transformation is what truly captures the readerââ¬â¢s imagination with Keats, and it is with transformation that a true concurrent theme is found. Works Cited Crawford, A. W. The Stranger in the Photo is Not Me Iââ¬â¢ve always felt a strange connection to the stars, one that I have never fully understood. I used to believe that it was simply the night itself that appealed to me. There is something so incredibly compelling about it. Itââ¬â¢s not the silence, necessarily, but the way that every breath is amplified; itââ¬â¢s not so much the darkness, but the way that the stars light it up. There is an unparalleled magic to them, to the way that they swirl and writhe and explode of their own accord. Although the moon will orbit for eternity and the stars will eventually fade into submission, it is the latter that I admire the most. I would rather die at the hands of my own power and light than live infinitely off of the nectar of somebody elseââ¬â¢s. Perhaps that is why I tried to take my own life mere hours after this photo was taken. I could let the eating disorder, anxiety, and depression that were ravaging my life snatch it out of my hands, I could fight an impossible battle against my own head and begin the long, uncertain road to a seemingly unattainable ââ¬Å"recoveryâ⬠, or I could simply allow myself to explode.
